American Hat Makers, a History of Craftsmanship

Gary Waltrous founded the American Hat Makers company at the beginning of the 1970s. With an initial investment of $20 worth of leather and leather working tools, Gary started crafting and selling leather belts, wallets and handbags from the trunk of his station wagon.

After a few years, Gary fashioned himself a leather top hat from discarded leather. He liked the idea so much that soon, American Hat was born and he started exclusively making leather hats. Today, American Hat Company specialises in headwear inspired by the aesthetic of the old west and steampunk eras. Each hat is unique, defined by creativity and vision.

Top Hats

Whether you are looking for a simple and classic black leather top hat or a richly decorated leather topper, American Hat makes the hat you seek. You will find in our collection leather top hats inspired by steampunk, rock n’ roll and western fashions. Choose the highest quality with Henri Henri’s products.

Leather Cowboy Hats

American Hat also specialises in crafting uniquely beautiful leather cowboy hats and western hats. Conquer the wild frontier with a beautifully crafted wide-brimmed leather hat. Some are even fitted with a bonded tin wire in the outer edge, allowing you to shape the brim to your liking. You will also be able to find vented leather cowboy hats, perfect for hot weather!

How to Care for my Leather Hat?

As much as possible, we recommend that you avoid wearing any article of leather under the rain. Apply a leather protector or leather conditioner regularly, using a soft cloth. You can also keep your hat in a hat box to prevent accumulations of dust and sunburns.
