To make a Tilley, you need 46 hands handling 41 very precisely calibrated steps, ranging from cutting cotton canvas and foam to the finishing steam bath of this entirely handmade product. But in between these steps you would still need to braid, line and prick to add all the details that act as a signature that distinguishes Tilley hats from its many imitations.
