The Return of the Gavroche Cap for Men This Winter

The Gavroche cap takes its name from the character of the same name in Victor Hugo’s famous novel Les Misérables. These roomy, eight-panel caps have been a staple of men’s wardrobes since the early days of the Industrial Age. In recent years, they have seen a strong resurgence in popularity, notably due to the success of the hit television series Peaky Blinders.

An Irish Cap: Gavroche as a Winter Essential

To this day, Gatsby and Gavroche caps remain closely associated with Irish craftsmanship and tradition. The most sought-after Gavroche caps are often made from Donegal tweed—a high-quality wool fabric. You can find this material in our Jonathan Richard Newsboy Gavroche caps as well as in our City Sport Gatsby caps.

Gatsby Cap or Gavroche Cap?

Both Gatsby and Gavroche caps can be worn in winter and summer. They are classic caps featuring a round crown divided into eight panels, joined at the top by a button. The crown is attached to the visor either by a snap button or stitching.
The Gatsby cap is distinguished by its more compact diameter, while the Gavroche cap is fuller in shape and tends to drape slightly to the side.

The Dutch Cap

The Dutch cap is very similar to the Gavroche and Gatsby styles. However, its crown is not attached to the visor, offering greater freedom in how it can be worn—tilted backward, forward, or to the side.
